Makerere University Business School (MUBS) under the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Business Administration has officially launched upto 24 short courses in Sports Administration and Governance, a major step forward in the professionalization of Uganda’s sports industry. The launch was presided over by MUBS Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi, in collaboration with key stakeholders from the Uganda Olympics Committee (UOC), the National Council of Sports (NCS), and Mandela National Stadium.
The launch drew closer the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UOC, NCS, and Mandela Stadium. This agreement lays the foundation for the roll out of short courses, new diploma and postgraduate diploma programs in Sports Administration education, aimed at equipping sports professionals with essential knowledge and skills for modern sports management.
The curriculum will cover a wide range of critical topics, including: Sports Governance, Risk Management, Sports Organization, Anti-Doping Practices, Sports Nutrition, Artificial Intelligence in Sports Administration, Ethics in Sports, Planning and Finance in Sports Management, among others.
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Muhwezi expressed MUBS support towards the partnership and the impact it is expected to have on Uganda’s sports sector. “We are proud to be part of an initiative that is setting a new benchmark for sports professionalism in Uganda. This curriculum is not only about education, it’s about nurturing holistic individual who can contribute meaningfully to the world of sports,” he said.
Officials from the Uganda Olympics Committee and the National Council of Sports also welcomed the collaboration, noting that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to raising standards in sports management and preparing Ugandans to lead on both national and international sports stages.
The newly proposed programs are expected to attract individuals already working in the sports sector, as well as students aspiring to build careers in sports administration, coaching, and governance.
This initiative reaffirms MUBS’s role in shaping innovative academic programs that respond to national development needs and evolving global trends.
Short Courses developed and launched include the following: Talent Identification, Development, Placement and contracts negotiation in Sports, Sports governance, Agency and Administration, Team Building and ADR-alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in sports, Artificial Intelligence for Para Sports Administration, Sports Stewardship and fans management, International Sports Organization, practice and Diplomacy, Emotional Intelligence, Psychology and Ethics for Sports, among others.
