September 10- 13, 2025. Ms. Juliet Kateega, the Dean of Students at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), joined fellow student affairs professionals at the Annual Deans of Students and Guild Leaders Conference, held at Gulu University
The conference attracted over 34 University Deans of Students and 180 student Guild Leaders from institutions across the country. It served as a vital platform for capacity building, leadership development, and constructive dialogue on the challenges and opportunities facing higher education in Uganda today.
Presiding over the event, Professor George Ladaah Openjuru, Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, commended the Deans for their dedication to mentoring and counselling students. He emphasized their vital role in maintaining student discipline, promoting welfare, and contributing to leadership development across campuses.
Representing MUBS among the Guild Leaders in attendance, Lynnette Tuheirwe shared her reflections on the conference: “We explored harmonious co-existence between student leaders and administration, governance, and better ways to address student challenges. Great insights for the future,” she said. Her presence helped ensure that student voices were directly represented in discussions aimed at shaping inclusive and supportive campus policies.
Rev. Canon Asaph Kabakyenga, Dean of Students at Bishop Stuart University, was unanimously elected Deputy General Secretary of the Uganda Deans of Students Forum for a three-year term. Bishop Stuart University was also selected to host the Forum’s next conference in September or October 2026.
The conference ended with a joint commitment from institutions to enhance inter-university collaboration in student support services and to advocate for greater recognition of student affairs as a key pillar of higher education excellence.
