MUBS students actively cleaning Bugolobi Market as part of their community outreach initiative.
Students from Makerere University Business School (MUBS) on Friday, November 14, 2025, carried out a community cleaning exercise at Bugolobi Market, sweeping and clearing waste around the busy trading center as part of efforts to promote public health, hygiene, and community development.
The initiative was spearheaded by the MUBS Entrepreneurship Students Association (MUESA) in collaboration with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and market vendors. The team cleaned stalls, unclogged drainage channels, and cleared litter from the market surroundings, showcasing a collective commitment to a cleaner and more vibrant community.
Rwogamu Hagayi, leader of the students’ association, noted that the clean-up is part of a broader series of outreach activities targeting markets across Kampala. “Our goal is not only to contribute to community well-being but also to strengthen collaboration between entrepreneurship students and the business community,” he said.
Dr. Christopher Kusemererwa, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, emphasized the importance of such hands-on initiatives. “Activities like this equip students with practical experience essential for starting and sustaining successful enterprises. Exposure to real-world business challenges fosters self-reliance and reduces dependency on formal employment,” he explained. Programme supervisor Ms. Maureen Mukoda added that engaging with communities enables students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. “These experiences nurture creativity and deepen students’ understanding of the dynamics within small and medium enterprises,” she said.
Ms. Juliet Mbabazi, Chairperson of Bugolobi Market, commended the students for their commitment, noting that the clean-up enhanced market hygiene and strengthened partnerships between MUBS and the community. The activity also highlighted the important role universities play in promoting social responsibility and providing students with practical skills for entrepreneurial success.
