Facilitators and Participants at the professional Arbitration and Mediation Training
The Arbitration & Mediation Society of Uganda (ArbMedSocUG), in partnership with Makerere University Business School, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Incubation Centre (MUBS– EIIC), conducted a professional Arbitration and Mediation Training at the MUBS–EIIC. The training took place on 17th, 19th, 20th, 24th, and 25th November 2025, and aimed to equip participants with practical skills in conflict resolution, mediation, and arbitration.
Day 1 focused on the fundamentals of mediation, including understanding conflict and conflict management, mediator techniques, mediation structures, roles and effectiveness of mediators, and relevant rules and laws. Participants delivered engaging presentations demonstrating their grasp of these concepts.
Day 2 emphasized the practical application of mediation. Participants learned how to initiate mediation sessions, analyze cases, plan strategies, build rapport, conduct caucusing, and draft mediation agreements. Interactive exercises provided opportunities to practice real-life mediation scenarios under the guidance of experienced facilitators.
Participants also engaged in insightful discussions on arbitration, covering topics such as the benefits of arbitration, domestic versus international arbitration, the roles of arbitration institutions, and drafting international arbitration agreements. As global trade expanded, arbitration had become the preferred method for resolving international commercial disputes due to its enforceability, party autonomy, and cost- and time efficiency.
The training equipped participants with knowledge of international arbitration laws and procedures, enabling them to practice as arbitration practitioners handling cross-border commercial disputes. It also underscored ArbMedSocUG and MUBS EIIC’s commitment to building a skilled cadre of mediators and arbitrators, promoting effective conflict resolution, and enhancing access to justice in Uganda.
