Students in the BTTM2 program at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) recently showcased their Culture and Heritage Tourism coursework through an innovative competency-based learning exercise. The initiative aimed to connect classroom theory with practical, real-world application, helping students develop the skills needed to interpret and present cultural heritage effectively.

In a pursuit to improve learning outcomes through quality and inclusive education, effective assessment plays a pivotal role in facilitating students’ advancement to the next level. To achieve this, students must continually be evaluated to ensure that teaching and learning are effective. This exercise served as both a practical assessment and a learning opportunity, allowing students to reflect on their strengths and areas for improvement.

During the exercise, students engaged in digital storytelling, interactive presentations on cultural sites and traditions, project-based research, and community engagement simulations. These activities allowed them to apply knowledge in real-life tourism contexts, enhance problem-solving and research skills, and explore ways to involve communities in heritage preservation.

Dr. Provia Kesande, the course lecturer, noted that this hands-on approach goes beyond traditional teaching, equipping students with the mix of practical, digital, and professional skills required in the tourism industry. She emphasized that such exercises strengthen students’ understanding of cultural diversity and prepare them to deliver authentic and meaningful experiences to tourists.

“Effective assessment is at the heart of quality education. By continually evaluating students, we ensure that learning is meaningful, skills are applied in real-world contexts, and every student is empowered to progress to the next level.”

The successful showcase highlights the power of competency-based education in fostering creativity, engagement, and professional readiness among tourism students. Short videos from the session captured the energy, talent, and dedication of the BTTM2 students.
