The Dean Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, Dr. Edith Mwebaza Basalirwa says mentorship and coaching encouraged both parents and students to own a business or a service firm while at school.
She was speaking at the inaugural mentorship and coaching business exhibition by Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (BESBM) final year students at MUBS Main Campus on Friday April,5,2024.
Students being assessed on their businesses
The students were examined and assessed on the businesses they had started during the mentorship and coaching program. Dr. Basalirwa says the mentorship and coaching program was approved by the MUBS Academic Board for the Bachelor of entrepreneurship students, “We appreciate Management and Council for all the support in this.” She added that parents who previously complained about the high cost of students starting and owning a business are now happy as they see their
children starting businesses that produce arts and crafts pieces, croquettes, bags, furniture, soap, Vaseline and briquettes, among others from which they make some money.
Dr. Basalirwa noted that, the Faculty has been struggling with how to make entrepreneurship and small business a practical course. However, she said them with the help of the annual NSSF and the National Media Group universities career fair, the Friday market and Students’ exhibition, students and parents have realized the value and it is now mandatory for students enrolling in the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and Study programme to own a business while still at the University.
Students being assessed on their businesses
“We want them to get practical skills of identifying problems and challenges in their communities and find solutions to them through creating trade and business, offering service or manufacturing goods so that when they complete their degree, they can join the MUBS Entrepreneurship Innovation and Incubation Centre, register their businesses and start creating jobs and employing other people. She also appreciated all the members and mentees for the good work done.
