First year students at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) have been urged to stay grounded in their values, set clear goals, and avoid destructive habits such as drug abuse.

The advice was delivered during the Faculty of Economics, Energy and Management Science orientation held on August 6, 2025, at the MUBS Main Campus in Nakawa.

Dr. Ronnete Atukunda, Dean of the Faculty, encouraged students to be thankful for the opportunity to study at MUBS and to let their faith guide them through university life. “As you begin your journey at MUBS, be thankful to the Almighty, Let your faith guide your steps,” she said.

She reminded the freshers that while university brings freedom, it must be used responsibly. “Use your freedom wisely. Misused freedom often comes at a cost,” she warned.

“Set clear, achievable goals for your academic and personal journey,” she advised. “Take time to understand who you are, your strengths, passions, and values. This self-awareness will guide you through your university experience and beyond.”Assoc.

Meanwhile, Prof. Susan Watundu, Head of the Department of Management Science, urged new students to be thoughtful about their decisions and to steer clear of negative influences. “University life brings new freedoms, but with these freedoms come important responsibilities,” she explained. “Be intentional in your choices, understand the difference between what will help you grow and what may hold you back. Avoid harmful habits, surround yourself with positive influences, and dedicate yourself to working hard. These steps are essential in building a successful and fulfilling future.”

Similarly, Dr. Bernard Onyinyi, Head of the Department of Applied Economics, advised students to live within their means and avoid comparing themselves to others. “Adopt a lifestyle that is financially sustainable. Should you encounter challenges, do not hesitate to seek support from your Save Deans and Heads of Department, we are here to assist you,” he said.
