The Department of Tourism Management, in the Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality and Languages hosted the French and Dutch Ambassadors for the first Students Inter-University Tourism Quiz competition in relation to the theme “Tourism and Peace”. The event took place on October 4, 2024 at MUBS Main Campus, Nakawa, and among the issues discussed were the opportunities in the Ugandan Tourism Sector.
The event brought together university tourism students to explore the vital connection between sustainable tourism and peace for inclusive development. Living up to their name, stature and age MUBS and Makerere University emerged winners of the inaugural Inter-University Quiz, competition.
H.E. Xavier Sticker, the Ambassador of France to Uganda charged Ugandans to embrace what God gave them as the pearl of Africa for it gives the country a unique advantage. “Tourism is Culture and sustainability in tourism is attained if the tourists have a chance to know more about Uganda in terms of its, history and people. There is competition in tourism because it is a business that enables people to earn a living, therefore competition will always be there. Students participating in the competition enables Uganda to be on the map of the world tourist destination and be seen as attractive when it appears in the news for a good reason “he noted.
He emphasized that the revenue collected form tourism highlights its value as an economic sector that has potential, and if tourism is more developed many Ugandans will earn from it and lots of revenue will be collected.
Mr. Richard Okuti, the Chief Organizer of the inter- university quiz competition said Tourism is one of the leading export earners and a strategic sector for the country, therefore, there should be increased awareness in the tourism sector.
