The Inaugural Youth Ambassador Workshop, organized by the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI), took place on September 16, 2025, at the UNAFRI headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, under the theme: “Harnessing Technology & Social Media for Peaceful Elections.”
The workshop brought together youth from across Uganda for a Peace Ambassadors Training Workshop, designed to empower young leaders with the tools, values, and digital literacy needed to promote peace and responsible civic engagement. The gathering aimed to build a generation of leaders committed to peace, unity, and issue-based democratic participation.
Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Kabbyanga Godfrey Baluku, Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, emphasized the critical role social media plays in shaping public discourse and democratic processes. He described social media as “our new public square,” cautioning that its impact depends on how it is used.
“Social media can be a tool for fake news and division, or a platform for truth, dialogue, and peace,” said Hon. Kabbyanga. “Youth ambassadors must become defenders of credible information, champions of positive narratives, and responsible digital citizens who mobilize their peers for peaceful, issue-based participation in elections.”
The workshop featured sessions on digital citizenship, countering online disinformation, peaceful campaigning, and youth engagement ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections. Participants departed equipped and inspired to lead change in their communities through peaceful activism and informed, responsible use of digital platforms.
Representing Makerere University Business School (MUBS) at the workshop was Guild President Nabwire Rose, she encouraged young people to recognize their influence and take active roles in promoting peace and democratic engagement.
“We are not just the leaders of tomorrow we are already the leaders of today,” she emphasized. “Our voices matter. Our choices matter. Democracy thrives where peace reigns. Let us choose ballots, not violence.”
