On December 08, 2025 Makerere University Business School together with Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) held an ISO certification engagement at the MUBS Main Campus Nakawa. The engagement was attended by UNBS officials led by The Executive Director Eng. James Kasigwa, alongside members of MUBS Top management.
Discussions centered on advancing plans to establish a National Quality and Standards Institute aimed at promoting safety and quality across multiple sectors. The initiative follows years of persistent challenges in Uganda, including the prevalence of substandard goods, manufacturing quality violations, and limited standards compliance among SMEs—problems that have constrained export performance and compromised consumer safety.
MUBS Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining high standards and quality across its staff, students, research activities, and operational systems.
“As a Business School and Centre of Excellence in business and management education, he noted that quality standards are fundamental to the mission and strategic direction of MUBS. Prof. Muhwezi further noted that the partnership with the UNBS will enhance the MUBS’ capacity to train and certify members of the business community, supporting their effective participation in the Government of Uganda’s tenfold development strategy.
Prof Muhwezi further noted that MUBS committed to sponsor one staff member to pursue a PHD in standards in an effort to cascade the standardization agenda among staff and the students
Eng. Kasigwa emphasized that the UNBS–MUBS collaboration seeks to increase awareness and appreciation of standards among students in higher learning institutions, highlighting the role standards play in improving operational efficiency and strengthening the competitiveness of Ugandan enterprises. “The Quality Management Systems will help in the improvement of quality teaching, the learning environment, the administrative work, and production of long live learners. ”
The Senior Administrative Staff Heads meeting with officials from the UNBS to review and validate the ISO 9001 Gap Analysis Report and discuss matters arising in line with quality assurance and continuous improvement on January 08, 2025.
He also encouraged MUBS Community and all Ugandans to adopt certification for both professional skills and products as a way of improving their positioning in local, regional, and global markets. Assoc. Prof. Ernest Abaho, Chief Quality Assurance noted that the quality Management Systems and the certification being introduced to MUBS, helps with the standardization of institutional operations targeting excellence and continuous improvement of the institutions quality.
This partnership with UNBS will enhance MUBS’ capacity to train and certify members of the business community, supporting their effective participation in the Government of Uganda’s tenfold development strategy.
“For an Institution like MUBS, this certification gives us an added advantage to strengthen positive stakeholders confidence especially with the employers that employ MUBS graduates” Assoc. Prof. Abaho noted.
He further noted that once MUBS has attained this certification, it will attract more sustainable and significant donors since this builds their trust and confidence to collaborate with MUBS.
“The certification process begun with a situation analysis to ascertain the state of the systems and where gaps need to be filled, and now the team is at a stage of assessing the Institutional readiness for the certification.” he added.
