Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has taken another bold step in expanding its international research network as Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi led a seven-member delegation to the University of Fort Hare’s 2025 Research Week of Excellence (RWE). The engagement reinforced MUBS’ commitment to building strategic alliances that accelerate impactful research.

Held from 10 to 13 November 2025 at the East London International Convention Centre in South Africa, the annual Research Week of Excellence brought together leading researchers, postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and international partners under the theme “Empowering minds and transforming communities through research”.

The conference serves as an important platform to showcase UFH’s growing research footprint, the vibrancy of its academic community, and the strengthening of global partnerships that are driving impactful research.

Addressing participants, Prof. Muhwezi underscored the strength and value of the longstanding partnership between MUBS and the University of Fort Hare, stating: “Our partnership with the University of Fort Hare is instrumental in advancing research that speaks to Africa’s most pressing needs. MUBS remains committed to deepening and sustaining this collaboration to drive development across our institutions and the continent.”

The MUBS delegation met with UFH leadership to review ongoing research initiatives, strengthen academic exchanges, and discuss ways to expand collaboration in line with the strategic priorities of both universities.

Dr. Nthabi Taole-Mjimba, UFH Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research Partnerships and Innovation, welcomed academics from Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Botswana to a celebration of research excellence, highlighting the critical role of collaboration in advancing knowledge. “Research thrives on partnerships. It is through collaboration that our work achieves relevance and global impact,” she said. Prof. Sakhela Buhlungu, who serves as both Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UFH, highlighted research as central to the growth and transformation of universities. “Research is the heart and lifeblood of universities. It drives innovation, strengthens academic excellence, and ensures that Universities are recognised globally as leaders in knowledge creation and societal impact,” he said.

This year’s conference also showcased the growing international collaborations that are driving transformative scholarship across the African continent, reinforcing universities’ role as hubs for cutting-edge research and cross-border academic partnerships.
