The second cohort of the MUBS – UNICEF Uganda Digital Skills Training is well underway, now entering its second month of empowering young people with critical tools for the future. Launched on July 15, 2025, at the Makerere University business School main Campus, the training initiative is equipping young school dropout with digital, communication, and critical thinking skills designed to bridge the country’s widening youth unemployment gap.

With over 4.1 million Ugandans facing joblessness due to a lack of market-ready skills, this program comes as a timely and transformative intervention. Ms. Janet Akau, a representative from UNICEF Uganda, emphasized its significance. “This initiative is a crucial part of our strategy to address youth unemployment and unlock the potential of Uganda’s young population.”

This initiative signals a hopeful future for Uganda’s young people where skills, confidence, and opportunity converge to create a generation ready to shape their destiny.

The hands-on training has already seen remarkable growth in the learners. From basic device handling, the trainees have progressed to mastering software tools that allow them to work more efficiently and effectively.

Their improved digital literacy extends to smart social media use, setting up professional profiles, posting purposefully, and engaging safely online.

Collaboration has become a key strength among the participants. They are now adept at working together on shared documents, offering peer feedback, and strengthening ideas through teamwork. Beyond collaboration, creativity is flourishing as learners begin to produce their own digital content. From writing compelling posts to designing eye-catching graphics and producing professional-level photos and videos, these young people are shaping their personal narratives and building online portfolios.

Each day, the cohort builds new competencies and gains confidence, laying a solid foundation for entry into the digital economy. Whether launching entrepreneurial ventures or joining forward-thinking organizations, they are preparing to thrive in a tech-driven world.

UNICEF Uganda and MUBS have plans to expand the training to other regions including Mbarara and Arua, extending life-changing opportunities to more youth and contributing to inclusive regional development.
