Not even the strong walls, and the dark cells of prison would hinder Mr. Okello Willy Giles from living a meaningful life again after spending 22 years in incarceration. After his release from Luzira upper Prisons on January 19, 2015, where he had spent 22 behind the bars Okello applied for a position of an Office Assistant in MUBS and he was considered. He was posted to the Office of the Principal as an Office Assistant and served exemplary for nine (9) year until he officially retired.
October 8, 2024, was a day mixed with joy, laughter and sadness as the Office of the Principal bid him farewell after he retired from School service. He was honored for his exemplary service and recognized for his outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to the School. He was presented with a plaque as a symbol of appreciation for his years of dedicated service. The farewell meeting and handover ceremony took place in the old council room and was attended by the. Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi and staff in the Office of the Principal to
recognize the invaluable role Okello played in the institution. He retired officially from the School service on October 13, 2024 It should be remembered that Mr. Okello is one of the Luzira inmates who have benefited from the MUBS-Luzira university education program. Since 2009, MUBS has been supporting the rehabilitation of inmates
at Luzira upper Prison through training of inmates admitted on a diploma and certificate Programme in entrepreneurship and small business management. The program is MUBS’ contribution to the cause of humanity.
In 2011, when MUBS introduced the Diploma programme at Luzira, Mr. Okello applied and he was admitted for a Diploma in entrepreneurship and small business management, which he completed on record time, with a Second Class Upper.
The MUBS – Luzira University program is intended to offer the inmates an opportunity to acquire business knowledge and skills so that they can start up their own businesses when they get out of the prison and also get
employable skills. The program is offered as the School’s corporate social responsibility on basis that people need a second chance in life, and no one should be written off.
The Principal Prof Moses Muhwezi said it gives much joy to see colleagues happily retire and more so to see workmates celebrating one another in a workplace or office. But It also gives a painful feeling to see colleagues leave an institution they have worked for so long, but we appreciate God for enabling you reach this far. “Today, we are saying thank you to Mr. Okello for being a serious tidy and eloquent man. But the school will be organizing a special event to appreciate a team of staff who have retired from School service because their services can never go unappreciated, and they will forever be remembered. Them leaving MUBS does not mean that we should be distant from each other. Always come back home at MUBS”, said Prof. Muhwezi.
Ms. Serina N. Ateenyi a Director MUBS Executive Education Programs in the Office of the Principal and the supervisor of Mr. Okello appreciated him for being a strong pillar, multi cultural and a team player on the team. She appreciated him for accepting and embracing retirement peacefully and urged all the staff to embrace retirement and the old age because age and change are facts of life that we need to live peacefully with. Mr. Okello appreciated his colleagues for surprising him with a thanksgiving farewell and appreciated MUBS as an institution for giving him an opportunity to serve in a corporate world for close to a decade. He appreciated Prof Muhwezi for his humility because no matter how busy he is, he has always given him attention and he believes that Prof Muhwezi gives it to everyone.
He further appreciated him for the good way he treats staff for the little time he has been the Principal, He also appreciated Ms. Serina for being a supervisor who cares so much about the people who report to her. Mr. Okello advised his colleagues to prepare and plan accordingly for retirement so that they don’t hesitate when their time comes. His colleagues in the Office of the Principal praised him for always being resilient in his work and all official assignments. He was praised for always being smart to depict an attire of the perfect public servant. They further appreciated him for his honesty and for playing a role of a father to the young people in the office something they noted to be remarkable and rare.
