Over 250 refugees underwent an intensive 10-day entrepreneurship training under the GROW Initiative at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), aimed at equipping them with practical business skills to rebuild their lives and achieve economic independence. The training, held from August 4 to 18 at the MUBS Main Campus in Nakawa, was organized by the MUBS Entrepreneurship, Incubation and Innovation Centre (EIIC).
Participants received hands-on instructions in adapting and thriving in a new environment, financial management, entrepreneurial mindset, personal development, connecting with customers, business formalization, planning for the future, and business sustainability, all designed to help them start and sustain small enterprises. Addressing the participants, MUBS Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi commended the refugees for their commitment to self-improvement and urged them to embrace entrepreneurship as a tool for transformation. “Knowledge empowers you to make better decisions, practice financial discipline, and grow your businesses with purpose,” Prof. Muhwezi said.
He acknowledged the unique challenges faced by refugee women and encouraged them to take pride in their work, no matter how small. “Do not give up on your business because of initial losses. Work hard, be passionate, and be ready to support others in your community,” he added.
Prof. Muhwezi also called on Ugandans to welcome and support refugees, reminding them that hospitality and unity are essential African values.
Dr. Diana Ntamu, Director of MUBS EIIC, commended the participants for their resilience and determination to build a better future. “No one is coming to rescue you, you must fight for your own success,” she told them.
“Learn the local culture, understand the economy, and adapt to your environment. If you fail to adapt, you’ll struggle.”
Dr. Ntamu further encouraged collaboration, urging participants to work with others and maintain a positive attitude even in challenging circumstances. “You can’t succeed alone. Learn new skills, use them, and stay optimistic. Challenges are temporary, but your effort can lead to lasting change,” she said.
The GROW refugee Training initiative is part of MUBS’ broader mission to support vulnerable communities through inclusive entrepreneurship education, helping refugees become self-sufficient and contribute meaningfully to society.
