“The university is a transformation stage in life a place where one either builds or breaks their future,” said Assoc. Prof. Rachel Mindra Katoroogo, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), as she welcomed first-year students during their official orientation at the MUBS Main Campus in Nakawa on August 8, 2025.
In her address, Assoc. Prof. Mindra urged students to take responsibility for their personal and academic growth, describing university life as a time for shaping one’s identity and future. “You have joined the real world of impact. Learn to build your own life and legacy. At MUBS, we give you space to grow professionally and as a person. Our strategy is to support and produce graduates who are relevant to the job market and have purpose of life” she noted.
She encouraged students to participate in academic and social associations, attend seminars and conferences and embrace both local and international opportunities available through faculty partnerships and engagements. She also cautioned them against indiscipline, peer pressure, drug use and exam malpractice. “Always remember you are not alone. The Faculty of Commerce is here to support, inspire and walk with you on the path to achieving your goals,” she emphasized.
The Deputy Dean, Assoc. Prof. Irene Nalukenge, advised students to take academic responsibilities seriously, reminding them that coursework contributes 30% to final grades while final exams account for 70%. “Attend your lectures, some assignments are only given in class. Avoid exam malpractice, join campus associations, and be cautious. HIV is still a reality, guard your life jealously,” she said, also urging students to choose positive and supportive friends.
